5 Ways I Stay Sane While My Soldier is On Deployment or TDY

So today’s the last night. The last night I spend with my hubby before he goes TDY. I was watching him pack and it’s just all so sad. Of course, he’s only going to be gone for a little while this time. We’ve spent longer apart but it still doesn’t make it any easier when these times come. This time is especially different because I won’t be at home with family and familiar faces. But, in order to stay sane, the key is to keep yourself busy. You have all the time in the world now to catch up on on the things you didn’t have time to do before. I’ve listed a few things below that I like to do when my hubby is away to keep myself sane and productive!

1. Do Something For Myself.

I usually like to take this time to pamper myself whether its doing my nails (there’s something so therapeutic about it to me) or put on an embarrassing facial mask. I like to do this when he’s away so I don’t have to worry about scaring him. lol

2. Read an Encouraging Book.

I’ve noticed that when I read an encouraging or motivating book, it helps me to not feel so down. Personally, I like reading books that are biblically based so that it can encourage me on my walk with the Lord even when times are rough or not going my way. One that I’m reading right now is called Uninvited by Lysa TerKeurst. I also recommend Spoken For by Robin Jones Gunn and Alyssa Joy Bethke. If you’re a military spouse (or even if you’re not) definitely read American Wife by Taya Kyle. I read that in 2 days and that says a lot coming from me.

3. Listen to an Encouraging Podcast.

Sometimes I don’t always have time to read so Podcasts are great because I can listen to them while I get ready for the day. I love listening to this Podcast by Francis Chan because he is really encouraging and comes off as very humble and sincere. It makes for a great start to my morning.

4. Spend More Time With Loved Ones.

Normally, if I was at home I’d spend this time with my family but for now I’ll have a lot of free time to catch them on FaceTime. If you have friends in the area, this is the perfect time to reach out to them!

5. Study!

This might not apply to everyone but I’ve recently enrolled in school again to get my accounting certification so this is the perfect time for me to study and catch up on homework. If you’re not in school, take this time to learn something new that interests you whether its that free online class you heard about, a new recipe you want to test out or that DIY project you’ve been putting off.

Like I said before, the key is to stay busy, stay motivated and stay productive! Let me know if you have any other tips to share!

Until next time,
